The term “au pair” comes from the French term, meaning “on par” or “equal.” Au pairs are young exchange visitors who travel to the U.S. on a J-1 Visitor Exchange Visa to experience American culture while living with a host family and providing childcare. This unique cultural exchange allows au pairs to build lifelong connections, improve their English skills, and gain valuable international experience.
To participate in the au pair program, candidates must apply through a designated agency like Au Pair International, meet specific program requirements, and follow U.S. Department of State regulations. If accepted and matched with a host family, Au Pair International will provide the necessary official documents to apply for a J-1 Visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
Au pairs initially commit to a 12-month exchange program but may extend their stay for an additional 6, 9, or 12 months upon successfully completing their first year. After completing their program (whether 12, 18, 21, or 24 months), au pairs receive a 30-day grace period to travel within the U.S. before returning home.
Au pairs may also be eligible to return for a second au pair program if they meet the re-entry requirements.
Au pairs play a crucial role in helping busy parents by providing childcare and performing light household duties related to the children. Common responsibilities include:
Becoming an au pair is an exciting opportunity to explore a new culture, build lifelong friendships, and gain international experience—all while making a difference in a child’s life. If you’re ready to start your adventure, apply through Au Pair International today!
